I recently added a new activity to my morning routine. I get up in the morning, go through my normal routine, and before I leave the hacienda I write out three things that I am grateful for and why.
Today’s entry –
I am grateful that My Daughter is Alive!
I am grateful that my business is growing daily.
I am grateful for my wife and friend Amanda.
I have been doing this for a while now. I must admit it has changed my attitude about a lot of things.
Today I had this thought…. Do happy people make earn more? For the record, it was just a thought, and not the reason I have included this in my daily routine. Thanks to Google the research is in…..
There were multiple articles on the subject and the answer is yes. A new study at Australia’s University of Western Sydney found that happy people do earn more than people who are sad. Also, happy people are more active, efficient and less affected by work stress.
Living a life of Gratitude is one way to make yourself happy. There was one example given by Leo Babauta who said he holds a two minute gratitude session. He simply sits or kneels, with no distractions, closes his eyes, and thinks about everything he is grateful for and for whom he is grateful.
He admitted he doesn’t do it everyday, but on the days he does he can tell he is more happy throughout the day.
I have the same admission – ever since I started this in my daily routine I find I am more at peace. I have a sense of calmness, and I am much happier that day.
Why does being grateful make such a big difference?
Here are just a few thoughts……
It reminds us of the positive things in our lives. The people, things and places that bring us joy.
It can turn bad things good. Being grateful for bad things that are occurring in life challenges us to be a stronger person.
It helps to keep the first things first. I must admit two years ago was small glimpse into a hell for me. Without going into to many details I watched my daughter faint, seize and stop breathing. She lost all the color in her face, and then turned purple. It was a scene I hope no parent ever has to see. Once she was revived and all was okay I dropped to my knees in tears, and I could not stop saying THANK YOU!
Later that day I got some terrible professional news. I looked up to the sky and said Thank You again. This time I was simply grateful that it was something professional and had nothing to do with any of my family.
Being grateful reminds you to thank others. Saying thank you to someone else can change their perspective on what they are dealing with. Texting them, sending them an e-mail, or even calling to show you are grateful for them lets them know they are appreciated.
My dad is a king at this. He probably sends over 500 cards a year to people letting them know he is grateful for something they did or said. I can’t tell you how many times someone has stopped me to let me know how much they appreciate my dads card.
Be Great Today!
“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “Thank You,” that would suffice.” – Meister Eckhart
